Scanner and IMD Enhancements

Materials handling systems will be upgraded to handle EDLs.

New features to the scanners include:

  • Communications options including Ethernet, Profibus, and DeviceNet
  • Power to process near-zero package spacing and multiple barcodes per package at high conveyor speeds
  • Custom configuration that allows for more than 3,000 scans per second
  • Windows-based configuration software
  • Integrated mounting feature

Intelligent Mail Device (IMD)

New, hand-held scanners, called Intelligent Mail Devices (IMD), will also be deployed to the field to read the new EDL, the 4-State barcode, and the 2-D barcode and replace current Mobile Data Collection Device (MDCD). The advantages of the IMD include:

  • The ability to read advanced barcodes including both 4-State and 2-D barcodes
  • A unique imager that captures signature at delivery, which makes operation paperless
  • The ability to log directly into printers without a PC interface through Bluetooth technology
  • Compliance with multiple Postal requirements, including size and shape
  • Continued support of operational programs

IMD will be deployed to over 38,000 facilities nationwide, including delivery units, plants, contract Postal units, and business mail entry locations, starting in the summer of 2005. They will be used for:

  • Delivery/Signature Confirmation
  • Special Services, including Express Mail, Registered Mail, Certified Mail, and Insured Mail
